ONSTAGE: ONLINE FESTIVAL
Celebrating culture and creativity in quarantine, Onstage: Online is an online theatre festival designed to showcase and support theatremakers during the Coronavirus crisis. The Gala has teamed up with The Assembly Rooms Theatre to present a series of theatre pieces, via the Gala Theatres YouTube Channel, created while the UK stays at home.
NEXT ROUND was commissioned to open the festival, and premiered on Thursday, 11th June. Originally scheduled for a strictly limited one-week online run, it was then extended for an additional two weeks.
ABOUT THE PLAY

In a small town in the North East of England, a young working class woman is trying to find her place in the world without her Father. Steph’s Dad has just died, and it’s up to her best friends Ant and Harry to pull her through the worst year of her life. In a year of transition, three friends discover who they are, how to grieve and that growing up is realizing that no one knows how to be a grown up... all through the medium of a good old fashioned Pub Quiz.
GOING DIGITAL: ADAPTING NEXT ROUND FOR ONLINE AUDIENCES
As Covid-19 took hold, it became clear that NEXT ROUND would not be able to go ahead at the Underbelly, Edinburgh Fringe 2020.
However, we were delighted to be invited to open the Onstage: Online Festival, in association with the Gala Theatre and Assembly Rooms, Durham. Presenting along with some of the UK's finest theatre companies, we cannot wait to share NEXT ROUND with audiences across the North East of England and beyond.
Just as all theatre creatives across the industry have been forced to adapt to the current situation, we faced the challenge of modifying the play for digital streaming. With cast and production team members scattered all across the US and the UK, we were proud to have been able to bring the company together to create this special piece of digital theatre.
